Calculation of carrier liability
for damage/theft/loss of cargo

If the Carrier of the cargo is responsible for damage or loss of the cargo, the damage shall be compensated in the amount of the cargo value at the time of acceptance of the cargo for carriage and may not exceed the level established by international conventions and agreements:

For carriage by air transport, the Carrier’s liability is limited to 16.67 SDR * (about 21 USD) per kilogram gross. This is provided for by the Warsaw Convention of 1929. Otherwise, it is called an Air Waybill Insurance (a summary of the rules is presented on the back of the air waybill).

For carriage by auto transport, the carrier’s liability is determined by the Convention on the Contract for the International Carriage of Goods by Road (CMR), signed in Geneva in 1956. The carrier’s liability is limited to 8.33 SDR (about 10 USD) per kilogram gross. This concept is known as an CMR Insurance (a summary of the rules is presented on the back of the CMR waybill).

For carriage by sea transport, the carrier's liability is determined by the Hague–Visby Rules of 1968. It is limited to 2 SDR (about 2.4 USD) per kilogram gross, or 666.67 SDR (about 800 USD) per container. It is called a Bill of Lading Insurance (a summary of these rules is presented on the back of the bill of lading).

SDR (Special Drawing Rights) is a conventional unit of calculation. It is created by "mixing" five currencies in certain proportions.
The SDR rate is published by the Verslo žinios daily newspaper.

Calculation of dimensional (volumetric) weight for air freight

When calculating the cost of air freight, either real (actual) weight of the cargo or dimensional (volumetric) weight is payable. This term was introduced and approved by the IATA (International Air Carrier Association), according to which the maximum of two weights (real weight or dimensional weight) is payable.

The factor for calculating dimensional weight in air freight:
6 cubic meters per metric ton, that is, 1m3 = 167 kg of chargeable weight.

Example of how to calculate dimensional weight:

Given — 1 pallet with dimensions 120x80x100 cm, real gross weight is 100 kg.
The volume of this pallet is 0.96 m3.
0.96 m3 is multiplied by a factor of 167, and we obtain dimensional weight equal to 160.32 kg.
That is, despite the fact that the real weight of the cargo is 100 kg, the chargeable weight of the cargo will be 160.32 kg.
